Pure tone audiometry or pure–tone audiometry is the main hearing test used to identify hearing threshold levels of an individual, enabling determination of the degree, type, and configuration of a hearing loss and thus providing a basis for diagnosis and management.
Pure–tone audiometry is the most commonly used test to measure auditory sensitivity. Pure–tone signals are delivered to the ear via air conduction and bone conduction at a variety of frequencies, and the patient responds to the sound by signaling the examiner with a button or by raising a hand.
First and most importantly, a hearing test should never hurt.
